Beatrice June Vande Kieft was born on June 6, 1921, in Mahaska County. She was the second of three daughters of Bert and Jennie (Krouse) Vande Kieft. Bea graduated from Pella High School in Pella in 1939. On Oct. 12, 1940, she and Wilbur John De Jong were united in marriage at the parsonage of the Second Christian Reformed Church in Pella where they were members. God blessed Bea and Bill with two children, Mark Alan and Mary Diane. Bill continued in the greenhouse business, the business he had grown up in, De Jong Greenhouse & Floral Shop. He and Bea later purchased it from his brothers in 1954. Bea was an integral part of the business and a faithful companion. They loved raising flowers, especially roses, and were very benevolent with their resources. They loved to travel with other couples and Bea enjoyed playing bridge, reading, knitting and especially quilting. Many of her quilts will be cherished by her family members. Bea was a dedicated Hospice of Pella volunteer for 20 years. She had served on the Hospice advisory board and was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year in 1993. Additionally, she had served on the Crossroads of Pella board and the Hilltop Manor board. Bea was a faithful, supportive member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. On July 6, 2007, her husband of almost 67 years, Bill, passed away. This left a lasting impact on her life.
