Betty's Story

Text size

Betty Jane Koopman was born to Gerrit "Dutch" and Bessie Elizabeth (Ten Hagen) Koopman on November 9, 1922, at Pella, Iowa. In 1940, she and John Schippers were married and to this union one daughter, Connie Sue, was born. Betty worked as a waitress at the Dutch Inn Café, for North Pella Greenhouse and as a receptionist and assistant for Dr. Lucas, a podiatrist, in Pella. John owned and operated car washes, sand and gravel pits, and a gas station. In later years, Betty and John were divorced and remained best of friends.
Betty then went to work at Central College in Pella until retiring in 1986 and she made her residence at Prairie Village for almost 20 years. In June, 2006 she moved into Fair Haven West and was very much at home there. Betty enjoyed cleaning, baking goodies and then giving them away, writing letters to old friends, and helping others, as well as chewing gum. She read her Bible faithfully. Betty did not get out much on account of her health problems the last few years. Following her massive heart attack, she loved watching Pastor Harold Salem from Aberdeen, South Dakota on Sunday mornings. At the age of 94 years on Saturday morning, March 18, 2017, she passed away at Jefferson Place in Pella where she had been a resident since February 10, 2017, due to a fall that resulted in a broken hip and shoulder. She dearly loved all the nurses at Jefferson Place and they loved her as well.
Those who will cherish her memory are her daughter, Connie, and her husband, Larry Myers of Pella; her nieces: Sherrie (Koopman) Bloodsworth, Sandra (Koopman) Lautenbach, Phyllis (Schippers) Hiemstra and Lillian (Goemaat) Van Roekel ; and four nephews: Gary Koopman, Larry Schippers, Jerry Schippers, and Gene Schippers; and a wonderful neighbor and dear friend, Ruth Dvork. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Dutch and Bessie Koopmans; her brother, James "Potty" Koopman and his wife, Elaine; and the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Henrietta (Schippers) and Bastiaan Goemaat, Leonard and Alice Schippers, Francis and Jennie Schippers, Magdalene (Schippers) and Harold Groeneweg; and nieces Bonnie (Goemaat) Miller, Mae Nieuwsma, and Rosie Van Den Berg. Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pella, Iowa and always enjoyed riding the church van with her many friends. Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 23, at the Van Dyk - Duven Funeral Home.
