David's Story

David L. Sels, 70, of 133 E. Court St., died at 1:30 p.m. January 5, 2016 at Vista Woods Care Center after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born March 13, 1945 in Pella, IA to Antonie and Anna Rykhoek Sels and married Sarah Jane Hudson on June 12, 1965. David graduated from Pella High School in 1963 and graduated from Central College with a B.A. in Psychology, he received his Master’s degree from Truman State University in Counseling. He taught social studies at the Ottumwa High School for 33 years, retiring in the year 2000. David grew up in a close family, and spent a lot of time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was happy enjoying a challenging conversation with friends, working with his hands fixing things and photographing family and our beautiful City. When he moved to Ottumwa in 1967, he worked to make a positive contribution to his community. He and his wife, Sarah, were foster parents and he was a very giving man. He spent 6 years as a member of the Ottumwa City Council, owned and maintained rental units, and served on the Planning and Zoning commission. He worked to establish The Ottumwa Exploritorium, was active in Civitans, the United Church of Christ and the Siddhartha House Board. David was a member of the Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M., Rose Chapter #552 Order of Eastern Start and Christina Court #3 Order of the Amaranth. He had served with the Iowa Army National Guard. Surviving are his wife, Sarah; a daughter, Jennifer McCoy of Ottumwa; two granddaughters, Brenna and Brooke McCoy at home; a sister, Mary Ann Wallace of Kinston, IL; a brother, Fred (Betty) Sels of Pella; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Daniel David; a brother, Peter and a sister, Gertrude Fike. Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2016 at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with Rev. David Klanderman officiating. Visitation with the family present will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
