Dr. Raymond's Story
Dr. Raymond Eldridge Martin, Jr., age 77, died peacefully on May 26, 2017, at The Comfort House in Pella. The cause of death was posterior cortical atrophy, a rare form of dementia. Ray was born October 6, 1939, to Eldridge and Lois (Lucy) Martin in Quapaw, Oklahoma.
Dr. Martin was clarinetist with the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C., before joining the music faculty at Central College in Pella. He was Professor of Music there for 43 years and clarinetist with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra for 28 years.
Ray is survived by his wife Robin E. (Oyler) Martin of Pella, Iowa; their sons Joseph C. Martin (Marine Prissette) of Brooklyn, NY, and Philip T. Martin (Anna Schutz) of Chicago; grandchildren Liam Yves Kelly, Darius René Martin, Joséphine Étoile Martin, and a sister De Lois (Martin) Hall of Tulsa, OK.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Diana (Martin) Morrissey of Tulsa, OK.
A memorial service will be held in Pella at a future date.
