Howard Dale Bogaards was born on April 16, 1928, at his parents' home in Pella. He was the son of William and Margaret (De Jong) Bogaards and attended the Pella Community Schools. Howard was inducted into the Army of the United States in November, 1950; was transferred to the Army Reserves in November, 1952; and discharged in August, 1956. During this time in April, 1951, he and Mildred Geraldine Van Wyk, who was from Sully, were united in marriage. To this union two sons were born: Doyle Eugene and Daryl Laverne and a daughter, Karla Luann, who was stillborn in 1966. Daryl was killed in an auto/pedestrian accident in 1961 at the age of four years, which was a defining time in Howard’s life. Howard spent his entire lifetime associated with automobiles. He began his working career as a mechanic at the Ford Garage in Pella and in the early 1960s, opened his own station. It was first a Texaco and then a Conoco Station. He sold gasoline, worked as a mechanic, sold cars, and eventually drove cars for other dealerships. He was a self-taught mechanic and the work he did spoke for him. Howard loved to dance and met Mary Bernhart (Kelly) Lacy on one of those occasions. They were united in marriage on Aug. 14, 1998, and continued to enjoy this activity together. On Thursday, March 3, 2016, ‘Bogie’ passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella at the age of 87 years.
