John Edward Bloodsworth was a son of John William and Gertrude (Diekema) Bloodsworth. He was the third of four children and was born on December 10, 1935, in Fifield, Iowa. John received an 8th grade education at the Silver Grove Country School. As a young lad while living at home with his parents he began working as a farm hand for his sister, Irene, and her husband, Ross Van Wyk, near Pella, Iowa.
On June 3, 1955, he and Sherrie Ann Koopman were united in marriage and to this union three children were born: Russell, Johnna, and Rick. Following their marriage John began working as a brick mason for Sherrie's grandfather, Dutch Koopman. While working in masonry construction he built their home at 1202 Peace Street in Pella. He and Sherrie later owned and operated the South Pella Café and he then became a partner/owner of Ulrich's Meat Market until 1981. John thoroughly enjoyed his retirement primarily fishing, and hunting and camping. For several winters he and Sherrie spent time in Arkansas. John continued to encounter health issues for the past 15 years and was faithfully attended to and supported by his wife, Sherrie. On Tuesday, October 4, 2016, he passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella at the age of 80 years.
He is survived by Sherrie; their three children and their spouses, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. They are: Rus and Teresa (Zickel) Bloodsworth of Pella, Iowa; Johnna and Wes Schippers of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Rick and Machelle (De Wild) Bloodsworth of Pella, Iowa. John leaves an older sister, Irene (Ross) Van Wyk and his younger brother, Tom Bloodsworth and his wife, Shirley, all of Pella; his brother-in-law, Lyle (Dollie) Cretsinger of Spencer, Iowa; along with a sister-in-law, Sandra (Koopman) Lautenbach of Pella and a brother-in-law, Gary Koopman and his wife, Nancy, of British Columbia; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Gertrude Bloodsworth; his sister, Dollie Cretsinger; his brother-in-law, Wm. Ross Van Wyk; and his parents-in-law, James and Elaine Koopman. A Service of Remembrance was held on Saturday, October 8 at Van Dyk- Duven Funeral Home in Pella.
