Keith was born September 8, 1926 in Grimes, Iowa, the son of William and Cynthia (VerBeek) Tait. He grew up poor in Pella, graduating from Pella High School in June of 44 and enlisting in the Army Air Corp a few weeks later. At age 18 he was in Okinawa serving as a crew chief on the B29 Look Homeward Angel and sleeping under a bombed out tank at the base of HackSaw Ridge. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1946. He attended Iowa State University on the GI bill and graduated with a BS in Animal Science in 1951. Hired by Hormel right out of school, he met his wife of 62 years in their Austin office. He spent 35 years with Hormel as a Hog Buyer, a job he looked forward to every day. His white car with the green Hormel sign on the side was a fixture on the country roads surrounding Sherburn and Pella. His customers knew him as a friend who could be counted on.
On August 17, 1952 he was married to Lavon Godfredson at the Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota. He and Lonnie remained married for 62 years up until her death in 2014. He spent his childhood hunting and playing in the woods and fields around Pella but later gave up hunting for golf. An expert golfer, a past club champion, and kept a single digit handicap for over 40 years. He and Lonnie spent 26 years of retirement in Mesa, Arizona where they played golf five days a week and kept a very active social life, never missing an opportunity to dance. They were both actively involved in Churches for their entire lives and were members of the Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden, Iowa.
Surviving are his three sons; Steve Tait and his wife Cea of Salida, Colorado, Bruce Tait and his wife Patty of Woodbury, Minnesota, and Tom Tait of Carroll, Iowa.
