Mary Jane Van Sittert


Mary Jane Van Sittert passed away on December 30, 2018, at the age of 98, at Brighton Gardens Skilled Nursing facility in Omaha, Nebraska. Mary was born on November 27, 1920 at Otley, Iowa. Her parents were Mars P. and Katherine Muilenberg Van Hemert. She made confession of faith and was baptized at Monroe Baptist Church on June 9, 1929. Mary graduated from Pella High School in 1938 with a Normal Training certificate which qualified her to teach in Iowa rural schools, which she did for 2 years. On May 29,1941 she married Warren Glenn Van Sittert of Pella. After Warren completed his duty with the US Navy during WW II, Mary and Warren started a Plumbing and Heating business. Mary worked in the business until their retirement in 1981. Mary was a member of Second Reformed Church in Pella from September 29,1941 until her death. She served as a Sunday School teacher and as treasurer of the Ladies Aid Society and Mission Circle. Mary served as a volunteer at the Pella Hospital and was a participant in the Women's Health Institute Program. Some of Mary's favorite activities were bowling which she did thru her 87th birthday and playing bridge which she did thru her 95th birthday. Mary had a great sense of humor which she maintained until her death.
Mary was preceded in death by Warren who passed in 1996, her parents, two brothers Purl and Jim Van Hemert and 2 grandchildren. She is survived by her 2 children and their spouses: Beth and Joel Norby of Omaha, Nebraska, Tom and Vicky Van Sittert of Henderson, Nevada, 5 grandchildren; Kris Norby, Katie Norby, Will Van Sittert, Paul Van Sittert and Katie(Kyle) Makimoto, 3 great grandchildren; Talia Norby, Brandon Makimoto and Sloane Makimoto, and a brother-in-law, Logan Van Sittert.
A Memorial Service is being planned for later this spring at Second Reformed Church in Pella.
