Robert Lester Dahlin was born on March 19, 1933, in Olivet, Iowa. He was the second of four children that were born to Lester and Carrie (Meinders) Dahlin. Bob, as he was known, attended school in Fremont, Iowa, and graduated from Fremont High School with the class of 1951. On Oct. 29, 1953, he was united in marriage with Darlene Braafhart, a daughter of Harry and Gail (Jarman) Braafhart. They were married at the Second Reformed Church in Pella. To this union four children were born: Roger Jay on Dec. 10, 1954, Kerri Kristine on May 20, 1957, Randal Scott on Jan. 8, 1960, and Jana Lee on Nov. 18, 1964. Bob was inducted into the United States Army on June 12, 1953, at Camp Dodge, and served his country honorably until his separation on May 10, 1955, at Fort Sheridan, Ill. Upon returning to Pella, he began a career working in the gas division of Iowa Electric Light and Power. He worked there for 32 years until his retirement. Bob also enjoyed driving school bus for the Pella School District which he continued to do until the 2013-14 school year, attaining over 20 years of service. Bob enjoyed attending football games, watching Pella High School, Central College, University of Iowa, and the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed coaching Little League baseball and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bob sustained compression fractures in his back and forced him to slow down his pace in life. His health began to steadily decline in March of 2015. Bob passed away suddenly on Nov. 11, 2015, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella. He attained the age of 82 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene (Braafhart) Dahlin of Pella, his four children, Roger and wife Brenda Dahlin of Yulee, Fla., Kris and husband Ron Vande Lune of Pella, Randy and wife Mona Dahlin of Des Moines, and Jana and husband Nathan Woolen of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; along with 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Of his original family, Bob leaves just one brother, Ivor Dahlin of Puyallup, Wash. Of his wife’s family, he leaves his sister-in-law, Mary Ballenger of Pella, brother-in-law, Harry and Mary Braafhart of Pleasant Hill, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Betty Wise and Melvin Dahlin; parents-in-law, Harry and Gail Braafhart, and brother-in-law, Lloyd Ballenger. Bob was a member of the Pella Masonic Lodge, and a member of Trinity Reformed Church in 1961. He will be remembered fondly for his wonderful sense of humor and the love he had for his family. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Pella. Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
