Ruth J. Dvorak
Ruth Joan White was born Jan. 18, 1929, on her family farm near Nemaha, Iowa. Because the doctor recorded her birth the following morning, Ruth's official birth date was Jan. 19, 1929. She was the 6th of 8 children born to Anna and Daniel White.
Ruth excelled at basketball in high school and her team went to the girls' state tournament. She graduated from AIB in Des Moines, where she met Kenneth J. Dvorak of Chelsea, Iowa. Ruth and Ken married in September 1950, settled in Marshalltown, and both worked for Lennox.
Ruth and Ken had 3 daughters, Deborah, Susan, and Kathryn. After Ken died of cancer in 1964, Ruth moved her family to Iowa Falls, where she graduated with honors from Ellsworth College and then UNI, earning her M.A. in English. Ruth taught English and established a Writing Center at Ellsworth College. After her daughters were grown, she taught at the Embassy School in Monrovia, Liberia, Africa, and then settled in Prescott, Arizona, teaching at Yavapai College and at Maranatha Christian School.
In later years Ruth helped care for grandsons Jim Ford in Kansas City and then Joe Dvorak in Pella. Her grandsons were one of the great joys of her life, as were her great grand-twins Harper and Jackson Ford of Kansas City. She also fondly tolerated several grand-pets. Ruth loved gardening and yardwork, reading, prayer time, and taking long walks around Pella, chatting with the many people she met. Ruth had a happy, enthusiastic spirit and found great comfort in nature, her family, and her faith. She had a quick mind, a great sense of humor, and never tired of learning, improving herself, and staying fit and active.
Those left to cherish Ruth's memory are daughters Deborah (Gary Hunter) of Stoughton, Wisconsin; Sue (Bob) Ford of Kansas City; and Kathy (friend Curtis Kane) of Pella. Grandsons Jim (Lindsay) Ford of Kansas City and Joe Dvorak of Des Moines. Great grandchildren Harper and Jackson Ford of Kansas City. Brothers Joe White and Bishop C. Dale White, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ken Dvorak; brothers Dellus, Jerry, and Dan White; sisters Elva Kahn and Roberta Boatright; mother-in-law Emma Dvorak; sisters-in-law Doris White, Gwen White, and Pauline Allee; brother-in-law Leo Allee; and nephew Kenny White.
Ruth requested no funeral or memorial service. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Comfort House in Pella for taking such loving care of Mom. We will be forever grateful. And a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Robin Vande Voort of Pella Regional Health Center - Mom so appreciated you.
