Thelma Klimstra

August 17, 1931 - November 05, 2018

Thelma Klimstra Thelma Irene Klimstra went home to live with Jesus on November 5, 2018, at the age of 87 years while being cared for at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella, Iowa. Thelma was born on August 17, 1931, in Pella, Iowa, the daughter of Cornelius (Cornie) and Mable (Toom) Van Roekel. A childhood memory of Thelma's was growing up with a younger brother, Carl Van Roekel. Together they had a horse and pony and attended many horse shows on the weekends. She won many ribbons and trophies at these shows and these were good times. Later in life, she acquired a fetish for giraffes of which she eventually had a large collection.
Thelma attended the Pella Public Schools and graduated from Pella High School with the Class of 1949. While in high school she was the drum majorette for the marching band. Following her graduation Thelma worked for two years at the Pella National Bank. In 1948 she met the man of her dreams and on June 6, 1950, she married Marlyn Grant Klimstra from Fulton, Illinois, who was a Central College student at the time. They were married the day after Marlyn's graduation from Central College. Thelma then became a great stay-at-home mom to their two children: Stephen Craig and Sue Ann.
Thelma had been a very active member of the First Reformed Church in Pella where she served as a primary Sunday School teacher, singing in the choir and together with Marlyn, was a member of the Vesper Choir. Thelma had been an active member of the Central College Auxiliary and was a member of the Second Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. She was privileged to accompany Marlyn on many of his business trips around the United States with the Rolscreen Company of Pella. In 1972 the family moved to Chicago, Illinois where Marlyn was in charge of the Rolscreen operations. They returned to Pella in 1980. In 1988 Thelma and Marlyn decided to spend the winters in the south and they were blessed to spend 19 winters in Casa Grande, Arizona. As their health needs began to require more assistance, they became residents at Vriendschap Village in Pella.
Thelma is survived by her faithful husband of 68 years, Marlyn G. Klimstra; their son, Stephen C. Klimstra and his wife, Diane L. (Hatch) of Peoria, Illinois and his two children: Stephanie C. Klimstra and her two children: Dylan Sinn and Kylie Sinn of Orlando, Florida, and Michael Craig Klimstra of Pella, Iowa; and their daughter, Rev. Sue A. Klimstra of Waukon, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cornie and Mable Van Roekel; her brother, Carl Van Roekel; her parents-in-law, Dewey and Marie (Remmers) Klimstra, her mother-in-law, Dena (Bosveld) Klimstra and a sister-in-law, Shirley Klimstra.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 9, at the Second Reformed Church in Pella. Memorials may be given for Central College or Hospice of Pella Comfort House. Van Dyk -Duven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
